How to Care for Outdoor Furniture in Australia’s Climate

Caring for Outdoor Fabrics

Outdoor fabrics are chosen for their resistance to fading, moisture and mildew, while bringing colour, texture and comfort to outdoor spaces. 

Brush off loose dirt and vacuum fabric covers regularly to prevent dust, pollen and organic matter becoming embedded in the weave. Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth rather than rubbing, and treat stains as soon as possible. 

For a deeper clean, soak fabric in mild soap and lukewarm water, lightly agitate with a sponge or very soft brush, then rinse thoroughly and air dry. 

For extended periods outdoors or during the off-season, cushions should be removed or protected from the elements. 

Caring for Outdoor Timber

Jardan’s outdoor timber is crafted from spotted gum, a sustainable Australian hardwood pre-oiled with an exterior-grade oil finish. 

Like all natural timber, it will weather with exposure to sunlight and the elements, developing a silver-grey patina over time. Regular care helps maintain its rich natural tones and protect the grain. 

Wipe surfaces regularly with a damp cloth and wash thoroughly with clean water at least twice a year to remove dust, grime and insects. Reapply an exterior-grade oil annually, or more frequently in hotter climates and areas with greater sun exposure. 

Avoid high-pressure cleaners and abrasive brushes, which can damage the timber fibres. 

Caring for Powder-coated Surfaces

Regular cleaning helps prevent contaminants from degrading the powder coat or leading to corrosion. 

Clean every three to four months with a soft cloth or sponge and pH-neutral soap diluted in clean water, then rinse and dry thoroughly. In coastal or high-pollution environments, monthly cleaning is recommended to remove salt and mineral deposits. 

Avoid abrasive cleaning products, bleach, ammonia and highly acidic cleaners, which can dull or scratch the surface. 

Caring for Porcelain and Micro Cement

Porcelain is a non-porous, durable surface that can be maintained with a soft, damp cloth and neutral pH soap. For stubborn marks, use a non-abrasive cleaner and rinse thoroughly. 

While porcelain is heat-resistant and highly scratch-resistant, it is not scratch-proof. Use coasters and placemats to help protect the surface. 

Micro cement has a soft, tactile finish that benefits from regular, gentle care. Wipe away dust and grit before cleaning with pH-neutral soap and water. Wipe spills immediately, particularly acidic liquids such as wine, citrus juice and vinegar. 

Use felt pads beneath objects, avoid dragging items across the surface and do not leave damp or extremely hot items directly on micro cement.

Outdoor furniture is designed to withstand the elements, but where and how it is used can affect its longevity.

For the best protection, keep furniture in covered outdoor areas and avoid extreme weather conditions. Furniture used within 5km of the ocean or exposed to chlorinated pool or spa water can experience accelerated wear, corrosion and staining. 

During extended periods of non-use, remove cushions, protect furniture from the elements and use breathable, waterproof covers. Always ensure furniture is clean and completely dry before covering.
