Care & Maintenance
Care & Maintenance
Our philosophy is simple, we only make furniture that lasts. Over their lifetime our products will need a little care and attention to ensure they can be enjoyed by generations to come. The following information will help you care for your Jardan products in the best possible way.
Material Care
Timber
Cleaning - Regularly wipe timber to remove dust and dirt. Do not leave liquid to sit on timber surfaces as it can penetrate the surface and may cause staining. Any spills should be wiped up immediately using a clean damp cloth. This should be all that is required for day to day cleaning, but if preferred, Osmo Spray Cleaner Clear Interior can be used as a surface cleaner. This is a pre-mixed solution for everyday cleaning and maintenance which has been specifically developed for oiled and waxed timber surfaces. Do not use any other cleaners or polishes as they may cause permanent damage. It is not suitable for lacquered surfaces.
Maintenance - We recommend the use of Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner Spray for rejuvenating your oiled timber furniture (not suitable for lacquered finishes). This product is based on carnuba and candelilla waxes and also contains a small amount of Osmo Polyx-Oil. It is perfect for removing heavy stains or light scratches and provides the timber with natural hard waxes without forming a film on the surface.
When properly maintained, your Jardan timber pieces should last for many years. For older tables with significant wear and tear, you may wish to consider having them sanded back and refinished. Please contact your Jardan sales representative or closest showroom for a quote.
Outdoor Timber - Australia has one of the highest levels of UV exposure in the world. Our harsh sun and coastal climate can have a significant effect on timber kept outdoors including causing warping, bowing and splitting. All of our outdoor pieces are recommended for use undercover only. If outdoor furniture is not going to be in use for long periods of time it is recommended that it is kept indoors, or where not possible, furniture covers are used. Outdoor timber pieces should be lightly sanded and have a UV stable exterior grade oil such as decking oil applied every 6 months. This can be done more often in extreme climates.
Reclaimed Timber - Our reclaimed timber is sourced from around Australia, the species varies dependant on what is available so colour tone and markings will vary accordingly. It is not advisable to sit reclaimed timber directly on carpet or flooring that may stain as the timber may leach over time.
Things to Note - Timber is a natural product that will respond to its environmental conditions. Extreme variations in temperature and humidity can lead to warping, cracking and bowing. Direct contact with heat such as that created by hot pots and pans, laptops and other electrical items should be avoided. We recommend the use of protective mats and coasters. Slab or underfloor heating can be damaging to solid timber products as the heat causes the underside to dry out differently to the top. Depending on the position of the pieces within your home, blinds should be closed when items are in direct sunlight.
Rattan
Rattan Care
Due to the natural properties of rattan, it is necessary to spray water on the underside of the seat every six months and wipe down with a dry cloth to remove excess water. This will prevent the rattan from becoming dry and brittle. For regular cleaning, vacuuming is adequate for more deep cleaning, use soapy water and a cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive scourers, as these damage or fray the product. Where possible, avoid having the rattan in direct sunlight or directly above any heating vents.
Using your Rattan
To ensure the longevity and durability of your rattan seats, we kindly advise against standing on them, as this direct force may lead to potential damage. Additionally, we recommend being mindful of items such as keys or sharp objects in your pockets while seated, as they have the potential to cause tearing or harm to the product.
Fabric
In order to prolong the life of your fabric, we recommend you have it protected by our trusted partners in fabric protection and cleaning - Premium Surface Protection (PSP). Visit their dedicated Jardan client page at Premium Surface Protection for expert assistance with any questions you may have. Please note that fabric protection methods can vary widely in their effectiveness as well as their environmental impact. The methods and products used by PSP are the only ones endorsed by Jardan. The use of an alternative method would void your fabric warranty.
Vacuum fabrics on a weekly basis to remove dust, dirt and any loose feathers. Treat spills and stains as soon as possible by blotting with a lightly damp cloth to remove as much of the spill as possible, do not treat with non-recommended chemical cleaners or scrub as this can alter the fabrics appearance. To prolong the life of your upholstery and to treat difficult stains, we recommend cleaning by a specialist fabric cleaner. Please contact PSP directly for details of their services using the link above. Direct sunlight may cause colour change and aging of your fabric, for best performance we recommend positioning your furniture out of direct UV light. Please refer to the Materials Library on our website for care information specific to each of the fabrics in our current range. For information on discontinued fabrics or those from other suppliers please contact customercare@jardan.com.au and we will be happy to assist.
Leather
In order to prolong the life of your leather, we recommend you have it protected by our trusted partners in fabric protection and cleaning - Premium Surface Protection (PSP). Visit their dedicated Jardan client page at Premium Surface Protection for expert assistance with any questions you may have. Please note that fabric protection methods can vary widely in their effectiveness as well as their environmental impact. The methods and products used by PSP are the only ones endorsed by Jardan. The use of an alternative method would void your leather warranty.
Leather is a natural product characterised by the unique tone and individual markings that the animal has acquired during its life which may include creases and stretchmarks, scars and insect bites. Some softening and stretching of the leather is to be expected with use. Wipe leather with a clean, damp cloth on a weekly basis to remove dust and dirt particles that can work their way into the hide and abrade the surface. To treat difficult stains, we recommend contacting a specialist leather cleaner who can also assist with regular treatment of the leather to nourish and prolong the life of leather upholstery. Please contact PSP directly for details of their services using the link above. Please refer to the Materials Library on our website for care information specific to each of the leathers in our current range. For information on discontinued leathers or those from other suppliers please contact customercare@jardan.com.au and we will be happy to assist.
Cushions
Regularly shape and rotate loose cushions where applicable to maintain their shape and loft. Some movement may occur with loose covers as they are designed for a relaxed look and feel. It is natural that cushion fillings will settle and seat foams will soften over time. Scatter inserts can be invigorated by laying them out in the sun to air. While specialised fabrics have been selected to contain feathers in compartments, occasionally feather quills can pierce through the covers. They can be simply removed by pulling the feather
Powdercoated Metal
Regularly wipe metal with a damp soft cloth to remove particles which can abrade the surface with wear. Avoid contact with liquid, heat and direct sunlight. Abrasive cleaning products are not recommended.
Powdercoated Metal Outdoor - Powder coat is a decorative finish for outdoor use. While it assists with metal protection, it is not a corrosion protection in its own right. The components of Jardan powder coated products are produced in either aluminium or mild steel. The products are then powder coated to make the surface resistant and suitable for use in exterior environments. Minor corrosion spots under table tops, seats and bases do not affect the structural integrity of the product and are not covered by warranty. Whilst every care is taken to provide the most suitable finish according to the use and the environment the product will be subjected to, Jardan can’t guarantee this decorative finish against scratching, scuffing, chipping, fading or corrosion and as a result of direct use in harsh seafront locations. When choosing a colour for outdoor use please select a suitable UV stable choice, as the product is not warranted against natural fading.
Marble
Marble is a natural stone renowned for its unique aesthetic and character. With a honed finish and light protective coating applied, Jardan marble has a soft matt finish. Marble is naturally a porous material, making it susceptible to staining as it has an increased absorbency. It is essential that no liquids are left to sit on marble as they will penetrate the stone and cause staining. Wipe up spills immediately with a damp cloth. Clean regularly with warm soapy water, using a small amount of crème cleaner with a soft sponge or cloth for stubborn stains. Acidic liquids (orange juice, wine etc) should be avoided as they react with marble and can deteriorate the finish.
Brass
Our brass products are finished with a clear coat of lacquer to prevent tarnishing. Gently wipe clean with a soft cloth on a regular basis to remove dust and dirt particles Use Spray and Wipe or Windex to remove any difficult marks or stains.
Glass
Regularly wipe glass and mirrored surfaces with a clean lint free cloth. Windex can be used to remove any difficult marks or stains.
Outdoor Care
Outdoor
For longevity, please keep furniture in covered outdoor areas. Avoid extreme and harsh weather conditions. Timber, steel, compact laminate, and outdoor fabric will naturally discolour with age and timber leaching may occur over time in an outdoor setting.
For all timber products, we recommend gently sanding the surface and applying a UV-stable exterior grade oil such as decking oil every six months.
For powder-coated products regularly wash with warm soap water using a soft cloth. Rinse with water to remove soap. Take care when dusting to not scratch the surface. Avoid using steam cleaning, pressure washing, abrasive cleansers, steel brushes/wools, and cleaners containing chlorine and aggressive solvents. Do not allow organic or man-made debris to settle on the surface, as it may lead to permanent corrosion or staining.
For Compact Laminate tabletops use water, mild detergent mix, or mild household spray wipe down with a soft cloth. Dry using a microfibre cloth so as not to leave any cleaning solutions on the surface. DO NOT use any of the following commercial cleaning products, Abrasive Cleaners, Scouring Pads or Abrasive Papers, Solvents, Thinners, Turpentine (Turps), Ammonia, Bleach, Acetone, Easy-Off BAM!, M.E.K. or any other cleaning agents containing organic solvents or the above-mentioned products.
Furniture supplied with upholstered cushions should be removed and stored in dry covered location when not in use. Regular vacuuming, ideally every week, at half power where appropriate. Wipe down with a dry or damp cloth. Do not allow organic or man-made debris to settle on the surface, this may lead to permanent staining.
Whilst every care is taken to provide the most suitable finish according to the use and the environment the product will be subjected to, Jardan can’t guarantee a finish against fading or rusting as a result of direct use in harsh coastal locations.
Stacking chairs are supplied with pre-fitted stacking bump stops for protection. If the bump stop falls off, remount or replace it before stacking.

Rug Care
General Maintenance
Our care and maintenance guide is a general guide for looking after your rug. Jardan assumes no responsibility in relation to the use of this information. We recommend seeking the advice or services of an experienced rug cleaning specialist where required. Please contact us should you require more information about your rugs fabrication or construction prior to engaging a specialist.
Rug Positioning
The positioning of your rug will have an effect on the longevity and appearance of your rug over time. Avoid direct and continuous exposure to sunlight or a direct heat source, such as a fireplace or gas heater as this can cause fibres to dry out and colours to fade. Dependent upon the level of foot traffic where the rug is positioned, we recommend rotating your rug every 6 months to equalise fading and wear. For reversible rugs, such as Bam Bam we recommend flipping the rug to further benefit this.
Always ensure rugs are placed in dry areas, away from moist, damp or wet environments as the natural fibres of the rugs can absorb odors and moisture from the surrounding environment. Never place items on your rug which will block all air flow or may add moisture. Items such a pot plants should not be placed on rugs, as they can cause permanent damage. We recommend airing your rug once to twice a year, whilst the climate is dry.
Furniture Placement
Please note it is normal that heavy furniture will flatten the pile of your rug. In most cases the pile will be restored by moving or rotating the rug to equalise wear. For long pile rugs, you may use a soft brush to restore the flattened pile. When positioning or moving furniture on or off your rug, always avoid dragging as furniture can catch or pull the rugs pile.
Shedding & Loose Fibers
All Jardan rugs may shed and have some loose fibres, due to their natural fibres and hand made construction. Shedding may take place mostly in the first 1- 6 months of the rugs lifetime, then will slow over time. High traffic areas may always have a small amount of shedding. Simply vacuum any shedding fibres. If you encounter any loose threads or ends, please do not pull them. Simply clip them carefully with fabric scissors.
Vacuuming
To ensure the longevity and appearance of your Jardan rug, we recommend vacuuming regularly. We do not recommend using rotating or brush head vacuum cleaners. Over time dirt, dust particles and general grit will build up in your rug. To help with this, we recommend a deep vacuum two to three times a year. To deep vacuum your rug, vacuum the top side, then turn it over and vacuum the reverse side. This may help to loosen some of the dirt embedded in rug. To finish, turn the rug back over and vacuum the front again. Even with regular and the above vacuuming techniques followed and careful use, you will find dirt and debris will build up in your rug. When required we recommend a professional rug clean. See professional cleaning instructions for your specific rug quality.
Liquid or Spills
If your rug or becomes wet or damp, absorb any moisture with a clean dry cloth or towel. Dependent on the rugs weight, if possible, lift or raise the wet area of the rug off the floor to dry on both sides. Never use hair dryers or other heating devices to dry the area. Ensure your rug is completely dry before repositioning and placing any furniture upon it. For significant water damage to your rug, please consult a rug cleaning specialist for advice.
Spot Cleaning - Water based spills
For example milk, wine, juice, blood, soft drink, tea, coffee, urine and vomit.
Step 1:
Treat any liquid spills immediately. If the liquid has not settled into the rug try to absorb any excess liquid. Place a colourfast clean cloth or uncoloured paper towel directly on the liquid to absorb the spill, gently dab the liquid to soak it up.
Step 2:
Following this use a clean cloth, dampened with cold water and dab the affected area, do not follow a circular motion as this will embed the spill into the rug and can damage the pile, simply dab and blot working from the outside in. Follow this step a few times over if required.
Step 3:
After cleaning a spill or stain, the rug needs to be dried completely. Absorb any lasting moisture with another clean dry cloth or towel. Dependent on the rugs weight, if possible, lift or raise the wet area of the rug off the floor to dry on both sides. Never apply heat to the rug (for example a hair dryer or portable heater), only dry naturally. If necessary, restore the pile using a soft brush.
Spot Cleaning - Oil based spills
100% Wool rugs only - For example Oily foods, creams or sauces.
Applicable rugs: Bam Bam, Dari, Leo, Pebble, Loop, Stevie, Stone, Rocky, Cobble and Boulder
Step 1:
Treat any liquid spills immediately. If the liquid has not settled into the rug try to absorb any excess liquid. Place a colourfast clean cloth or uncoloured paper towel directly on the liquid to absorb the spill, gently dab the liquid to soak it up.
Step 2:
Combine either a mild wool wash solution with lukewarm water (1 part wool wash to 9 parts water) or use a suitable mild product prescribed by a rug cleaning professional for wool rugs. Following this use a clean cloth, dampened with the wool and water solution and dab the affected area, do not follow a circular motion as this will embed the spill into the rug and can damage the pile, simply dab and blot working from the outside in.
Spot Cleaning - Spills with colourants or acid
For example Cordial, red wine, red sauces & urine.
Please note spills that contain colourants or acid can damage fibres and your rugs colouring. Please take care when cleaning these types of spills. We recommend carrying out the spot cleaning as advised in Step 1, carry out 1-2 times to remove any residue possible, then contact a rug cleaning specialist to arrange a specialist clean.
Step 1:
Treat any liquid spills immediately. If the liquid has not settled into the rug try to absorb any excess liquid. Place a colourfast clean cloth or uncoloured paper towel directly on the liquid to absorb the spill, gently dab the liquid to soak it up.
Step 2:
After cleaning a spill or stain, the rug needs to be dried completely. Absorb any lasting moisture with another clean dry cloth or towel. Dependant on the rugs weight, if possible lift or raise the wet area of the rug off the floor to dry on both sides. Never apply heat to the rug (for example a hair dryer or portable heater), only dry naturally.
Step 3: Important
Immediately contact a rug cleaning specialist to arrange a specialist clean, as heavily coloured stains should be removed from the rug as soon as possible.
Spot Cleaning - Non water based, food or drink spills
Spills other than food and drink such as paint, shoe polish, nail polish, makeup and glue, will not respond to a water-based or wool mix solution spot clean. Do not to treat these spills yourself, as doing so may create a larger or permanent stain. Remove any excess of the spill by scraping it off gently with a spoon or soft edged utensil.
Then contact a professional rug cleaning specialist immediately.
Spot Cleaning - Dirt or soil
For dirt marks, such as soil, simply allow the soil or dirt to dry and then vacuum. If slight marks remain, use a clean cloth, dampened with cold water and dab the affected area, do not follow a circular motion, simply dab and blot. Absorb any excess moisture after cleaning with another clean dry cloth or towel. If a stain or marks remain, contact a professional rug cleaning specialist.
Professional Cleaning
After time your rug will require professional cleaning. Any persistent or large stains are best removed by professional cleaning. We recommend contacting a professional rug cleaner for all Jardan rugs. Always provide the fabrication details of the rug to the specialist, including construction, as different cleaning methods are recommended depending on each individual rug. Professional maintenance and cleaning is essential to preserve the life and appearance of your rug. We always recommend contacting a professional rug cleaner who specialises in handmade rugs. Do NOT dry clean or steam clean the above rug styles.
